Discover the best of South Korea with the new guide by National Geographic Traveller (UK)

LONDON (8 October) – Are you ready to ride the Korean Wave? Hallyu, as South Koreans describe the countryā€™s immense cultural export, has swept across the world in recent years ā€” covering everything from K-pop to kimchi. And this guide, distributed with the November 2024 issue of National Geographic Traveller (UK), provides a taste of what awaits when you get there.

Georgia Stephens, editor of the South Korea guide, says: ā€œItā€™s exciting to cover South Korea in a standalone, 84-page guide, which celebrates the best the country has to offer. Inside, the features provide an expert overview of culture, cuisine and everything in between, complemented by a wealth of original photography.ā€

In Seoul, we look at the many faces of local youth culture, from vinyl bars to the cafe that ā€˜rainsā€™. Over in coastal Busan, we round up the best ways to explore the city like a local ā€” with an option to quite literally surf the K-wave. Further afield, we head into the northeastern mountains for hiking and temple stays; meet the real-life mermaids of Jeju island; and taste our way around Jeonju, where traditional dishes are served with a twist.

Just donā€™t be surprised if you get swept along.

Also inside:

  • Cherry blossoms: Three spots to see the spring blooms
  • Matchmaker: Alternative cities rich in history, nature and more
  • Island-hopping: The southern city of Mokpo is the perfect base for adventures at sea
  • Meet the shaman: Kim Ju-hyoung on the folk religionā€™s place in modern society
  • Culture: Beloved crafts, customs and celebrations
